Date: 1968 Location: Birendranagar, Surkhet Description: The early stages of the construction of Surkhet in the valley, following the relocation of many people from the surrounding mountains. Prior to that, until the eradication of malaria, most people worked their fields in the valley but then climbed back up to their homes at nighttime.

Date: 1967 Location: Surkhet Description: A boy demonstrating a bow used to shoot hard clay balls at birds eating crops. The ball is placed in a small patch located in the center of the string, and the bow was twisted as it was pulled. This was important or the ball would hit the shooter’s thumb. The boy was amazingly accurate with this.
Date: 1968 Location: Birendranagar, Surkhet Description: Digging of the borders for a road that will stretch from one end of the Surkhet Valley to the other. The men seen in the middle beat their drums and the digging was done to the beat.

Date: 1968 Location: Birendranagar, Surkhet Description: This is a man from Jumla smoking a sulpa, something almost universally popular in the villages of Western Nepal at that time. It is not visible in the picture, but it was customary to have a damp piece of cloth wrapped around the bottom, and a piece of charcoal in the top to prevent the tobacco from falling through the pipe. In the mountains, many were still using steel, flint, and a cotton like substance to light them.

Date: 1969 Location: Lekhpharsa, Surkhet Description: The beginning stages of a creating a kulo (irrigation canal) in Lekhpharsa. When building a kulo, there was a great advantage of having a surveyor’s transit like Peace Corps provided for work on development projects. When shown the location of the source of water, a person could stake out successive locations with a man at a distance holding a rod, and usually in a day’s time, be able to determine whether there was enough elevation difference to deliver the water to the desired fields. The only alternative available at that time was to dig ahead of the water as the kulo was being built. But if the target fields were at a distance and out of sight, it was hard to be certain whether the kulo would succeed.
